Build a practical collection emergency plan

Every plan should be tailored to the collection, building, staff capacity, and likely risks. Core elements include:

• a current inventory with photographs and location information;
• clear priorities for objects, records, and areas of the collection;
• emergency contacts, decision-making roles, and communication procedures;
• supplies, salvage space, and vendors identified before they are needed; and
• staff training and regular plan review.
